Helping others is the
highlight to every adventure

Our purpose at Kapena Kai has been, and always will be, impacting kids and families with less access to basic resources, like education and proper nutrition. There are many areas of needs from different locations all of the world. Needs change from time to time and so does our area of impact.

I first visited India back in 2016

We taught at this small school in what is called the “slums” of Kolkata. Families and children bathed in the neighborhood pond, brushed their teeth, played and lived. The same place the entire community dumped their trash. I was wrecked that so many people lived this way, and were happy.

Later that day, right after school was out, I got the idea to ask about donating some kind of fruit to the youthful students the next day. I quickly learned that bananas topped the list as their favorite treat.

The next day we handed out bananas to all the children, and their faces lit up with excitement. I couldn’t believe how much the kids loved it, they thanked me endlessly. I really just wanted to thank them. I later learned that its more than just bananas.

Did You Know?

India has the second highest population in the world and produces nearly ⅓ of the bananas world-wide. That’s 11 million tons each year.

Why Bananas?

India lacks plumbing and sewer infrastructure like other parts of the world. Restrooms consist of a hole in the ground or occasionally a toilet. Toilet paper is rarely ever available as it could easily damage plumping. It’s culturally accepted for many people in India to use their bare left hand instead of toilet paper. This allows germs and diseases to spread more quickly.

One can peel a banana without touching the fruit that is consumed. The peel acts as a natural shield that prevents the spreading of unnecessary germs and diseases. Bananas boost hygiene and offer many other benefits too!

Bananas are rich in vitamins and minerals necessary for healthy living. India is responsible for 25% of the world’s banana production- making them a widely accessible and sustainable resource. And not only that, but bananas are naturally sweet and delicious!

Giving Children Bananas in India Kapena Kai

Going Deeper

The people of India taught me many things. But the most important thing I learned is that even if you have little to nothing- be kind, thoughtful, and giving to others.

What once started as a simple gesture of giving to others has since breathed life to Kapena Kai, an indepth community of creative individuals that aspire to adventure and help others all over the world.

Get out, explore, and help others along the way. The world will be better because of it.
